What Happens When One Who Is Suffering Touches Jesus?
Matthew 14:34-36 and Mark 5:24-34
Introduction : What Happens When One Who Is Suffering Touches Jesus? Now we know that powerful things happen when Jesus touches us! But What Happens When We Touch Jesus? In the Book of Matthew is another summary account is given in the Book of Matthew of Christ’s ministry. Christ did many wonderful things which were not detailed in Scripture but were often included in a summary statement. This summary statement has to do with many healing miracles. The Book Matthew in this chapter deals with the many who touched Jesus, however back in Matthew 9:20-23 Jesus spoke a “certain” with a blood disorder also in Mark and Luke deals with one “certain” individual who touched Jesus. The women in Matthew Chapter 9 serveed as the inspiration for many others to come to Jesus in to touch Him and be blessed and healed. Because we just touch very briefly while preaching on the series of miracles in Matthew 9 we we go more in depth in the book of Mark. We will read the general summary account in Matthew of the many who came to touch Jesus. Then we will go to the book of Mark which deals in more detail with the “certain” individual woman. We be looking at the book of Mark primarily to get a complete picture. Matthew 14:34-36
Significance Of The "hem": The "hem" was more likely the tzitzit ( "tseet-tseet"), the prayer tassels on the corners of a devout Jewish man's cloak. These tassels were worn in obedience to the command in Numbers 15:38-39 as a reminder to obey God's laws.
By touching this part of Jesus' garment, the woman demonstrated her belief that Jesus was a holy man and the fulfillment of God's covenant promises. Under the law, the woman's touch should have made Jesus unclean. Instead, His purity and power healed her, highlighting His authority over ritual law and His compassion for the marginalized.. When she touched the Lord, her life was instantly, completely and permanently transformed. Mark 5:24-34
I. The Woman Suffered Pain Mark 5:24-26
A. She Suffered Great Affliction Mark 5:25
We are told that she suffered from “an issue of blood”. This literally means that she was hemorrhaging, or bleeding, from some place in her body. The word “issue” means “a flowing of blood”. It may mean that she suffered from a menstrual flow that never ceased.
B. She Suffered Great Anguish Mark 5:26
1. Her Anguish Was Physical Mark 5:25
2. Her Anguish Was Medical
3. Her Anguish Was Social
4. Her Anguish Was Emotional
5. Her Anguish Was Religious Lev. 15:19, 25–276. Her Anguish Was Financial Mark 5:26 “...and had spent all...”
C. She Suffered Great Agony Mark 5:26 This nameless, suffering woman pictures two types of people:
1. This woman pictures every person who does not know Jesus Christ as Savior. Romans 5:12,3:10,Galatians 3:22,Psalm 9:17
2. She is also a picture of that believer who is laboring under a heavy burden.
II. The Woman Came Up A With A Plan
Mark 5:27-28
A. Her Plan Had Reasons Mark 5:27
B. Her Plan Had Resolve Mark 5:28, Matthew 6:33,Matthew 6:33,
Acts 4:12, John 14:6 The sooner you come to realize that Jesus is the only person Who can help you, the sooner you can get the help you need! Listen what He says to you: Matthew 11:28,Hebrews 4:15-16,I Peter 5:7
III. The Woman Received God’s Propitiation She Was Saved Physically And Spiritually
Mark 5:29-34 Propitiation In the raw sense it means God’s “Mercy Seat” Propitiation is used in a theological context, particularly within Christianity, and refers to the act of appeasing or satisfying God's wrath through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
A. She Was Transformed Powerfully Mark 5:29,Matthew 9:20
B. She Was Transformed Personally Mark 5:30-33
“virtue” has gone out of Him. This is a word that means “power”. We get our modern words “dynamite” and “dynamic” from it. Phil. 2:5-8,Heb. 4:15-16 C. She Was Transformed Profoundly Mark 5:34“Daughter,...”
We soon discover that we got far more than just a fire insurance policy.
We are children of God: I John 3:1-2
We have a home in Heaven:John 14:1-3
We are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus: Romans 8:17
We have a new life: II Corinthians 5:17
We are free from the power of sin to control and dominate them: Rom. 6:14
We are no longer God’s enemies:Romans 8:7
We have been reconciled to Him: Ephesians 2:12-13
We have been fully and forever forgiven: Colossians 2:13-14
C. She Was Transformed Permanently Mark 5:34
“..thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.”

First, the creed of tradition. Christ reveals that the religious leaders of that day thought the washing of hands was a cleansing from evil.
Second, the contemplations for evil. The list of evils that come out of the heart are headed by “evil thoughts.” That is where evil begins. So many things today encourage evil thoughts. Evil thoughts lead to evil acts.
Third, the changing of man. Christ says it is the heart not the hands that need to be cleansed. Putting people in new clothes and new houses will not change character. The social Gospel is not the answer.
