It’s Time to Go Fishing with the Master Jesus Starts Calling Out His Church! Jesus Starts His Ministry with His Church. Matthew 16:18, “I will build My Church” Greek word for Church is: -ekklesia=a called-out Congregation or called out assembly. Jesus began His public ministry by calling several men to His side to work with Him. (Calling out His Church) These men would become His disciples the first members or Charter Members of the Lord’s Church. They would follow Jesus and learn His ways and His doctrine. This is the essence of true discipleship.
A.) A Call to Fish Matthew 4:18-23
1. They Were Common Men “for they were fishers.” Matthew 4:18
2. They Were Called Men And he saith unto them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men, and he called them. (Matthew 4:19, 21b) This is an authoritative call. Jesus calls these men by divine command. This is not call to salvation, but a call to service.
Jeremiah 23:32
3. They Were Men Who Were Called to Preach Matthew 4:23, Luke 8:1 Jesus was showing the 12 how it is done by doing. The word teaching means to instruct and make known. The word preaching comes from “kerysso” and means “to preach, to herald, to proclaim, to publish.” Matthew 4:17, Mark 16:15
