THE SHATTERING SHOCK OF THE SAVIOR’S SUPREME SACRIFICE Matthew 27:50-66

Introduction: Today, we walk into the shockwaves of Calvary - the moment when Heaven shouted, Hell shuddered, and hope stepped out of the grave. It was THE SHATTERING SHOCK OF THE SAVIOR’S SUPREME SACRIFICE! It Was THE DAY LOVE SHOOK THE WORLD

I. THE FINAL CRY OF THE CRUCIFIED CHRIST Matthew 27:50

A. The Sovereign Shout - His Cry Was Powerful John 19:30 Not “I am finished,” but “The mission is finished.” Victory Cry

B. The Sacred Surrender - His Death Was Purposeful

Matthew 27:50, John 10:17-18, Luke 23:46

C. The Saving Substitute - His Death Was Propitiatory

Isaiah 53:5, II Corinthians 5:21, I Peter 3:18

II. THE VIOLENTLY TORN VEIL AND THE VANISHING VAIL OF THE OLD COVENANT Matthew 27:51  

A. The Torn Textile - The Veil’s Description

The veil separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies.

Dimensions: 60 feet high, 30 feet wide, 4 inches thick (Talmudic tradition). Material: Blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen (Exodus 26:31).

Purpose: To block sinful man from God’s presence.

B. The Divine Direction - Torn From Top to Bottom

III. THE SHAKING SOIL AND THE SIGNIFICANT SIGNAL Matthew 27:51  

A. The Earthquake of Revelation

Sometimes God shakes the ground to show the glory beneath it.

B. The Rocks of Realization Romans 8:22, Luke 19:40. Creation itself responded to the Creator’s death.

C. The Warning to the Wicked

The shaking earth foreshadows future judgment. God will shake all things.  Hebrews 12:26-27 A great earthquake at the end. Revelation 6:12

IV. THE OPENED GRAVES AND THE OUTGOING SAINTS 

Matthew 27:52-53 This is the most mysterious moment in the crucifixion narrative.

A. The Stirred Sepulchers - Graves Opened Mathew. 27:52

B. The Sleeping Saints - Bodies of the Saints Arose Matthew 27:52 Who were these saints? Old Testament believers Possibly prophets, priests, patriarchs They awaited Christ’s resurrection Hebrews 11:39-40

C. The Strategic Sequence - They Appeared Matthew 27:53 After His Resurrection This is crucial. They did not rise before Jesus. They did not walk around during His burial. They rose after He rose. Why?  He is the first to raise Himself from the dead! Colossians 1:18, I Corinthians 15:20D. The Significant Sign - They Entered Jerusalem Matthew 27:53

V.  THE FEARFUL SOLDIERS AND THE FAITHFUL SAYING

Matthew 27:54  

A. The Terrified Troops They “feared greatly.”

B. The True Testimony “Truly this was the Son of God.”

VI.  THE WATCHING WOMEN AND THE WITNESSING WORK   

Matthew 27:55 -56 Women remained when men ran.

A. Their Faithful Following They ministered to Jesus.

B. Their Fearless Faithfulness They stayed at the cross.

C. Their Future Favor They will be the first to witness the resurrection.

VII. THE BORROWED BURIAL AND THE BLESSED BODY

Matthew 27:57 -61

A. The Courageous Counselor He boldly asked for Jesus’ body.

B. The Clean Cloth He wrapped Jesus in linen - symbol of purity.

C. The Carved Cave A new tomb - prophetic of Isaiah 53:9.

VIII. THE GUARDED GRAVE AND THE GUILTY GOVERNMENT Matthew 27:62-66

A. The Political Plot The Pharisees feared a resurrection hoax.

B. The Roman Reinforcement A guard was set -likely 16 soldiers.

C. The Sealed Stone Roman seal - break it and die.

D. The Futile Fortification They tried to stop the One who made the stone.

CONCLUSION: THE SHOCK THAT SAVES! Matthew 27:50-66 is a shaking, shattering, soul stirring passage. So Beloved, we have stood today at the foot of the cross. We have heard the Savior’s shout, seen the sanctuary split, felt the soil shake, watched the saints step out, and witnessed the soldier speak up. And now - the question is not, “What happened at Calvary?” The question is, “What will happen in your heart?”
