THE CUP, THE CROSS, AND THE CHOICE!

Matthew 26:17-30

Introduction: There are moments in Scripture where heaven leans down, history holds its breath, and eternity steps into the room. Matthew 26 is one of those moments. This is not just a meal - this is a meeting place between the mortal and the majestic. And today, we walk verse by verse through this sacred scene. Today, we walk into that upper room. Today, we sit at that sacred table. Today, we hear the heartbeat of redemption. Before we sit down with Jesus, we must walk with Him through the preparation.

“The Shadows That Point to the Savior” When Jesus institutes the Supper, He is fulfilling centuries of prophetic pictures.

1. The Passover Lamb (Exodus 12)

2. The Manna in the Wilderness (Exodus 16)

3. The Cup of Redemption (Exodus 6:6)

4. Melchizedek’s Bread and Wine (Genesis 14)

5. The Covenant Blood (Exodus 24)

Jesus says,” This is My blood of the new covenant.” The old covenant was written on stone.  The new covenant is written on hearts.

2. PASSOVER HAD BLOOD ON DOORPOSTS - THE LAST SUPPER POINTS TO BLOOD ON THE CROSS

3. PASSOVER USED UNLEAVENED BREAD - JESUS BREAKS THE TRUE BREAD

4. PASSOVER HAD FOUR CUPS - JESUS LIFTS THE 3rd CUP OF REDEMPTION  5. PASSOVER CELEBRATED FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY - THE LAST SUPPER CELEBRATES FREEDOM FROM SIN

Passover lambs were slain on Nisan 14. Jesus died on Nisan 14.

A. THE BREAD- “THE BODY GIVEN” Matthew 26:26

B. THE CUP- “THE COVENANT SEALED” Matthew 26:27-28

C. THE CELEBRATION- “THE COMING KING” Matthew 26:29

The Lord’s Supper looks: Back to the cross - Inward to our hearts, Forward to His coming - There is a table in glory waiting for us. A table where: No Judas sits, No tears fall, No sin stains No sorrow lingers, No night comes. The Marriage Supper of the Lamb is coming. There is a table in glory waiting for us.

D. THE CLOSING HYMN- “THE SONG IN THE SHADOWS”

Matthew 26:30   The Lord’s Supper is not only rooted in the Gospels, it is foreshadowed in Genesis.

IV. THE PROPHETIC PICTURE! “JOSEPH’S CUP AND BREAD”

Genesis 40 “The Cupbearer and the Baker: A Type of the Lord’s Supper” This is where the Bible becomes breathtaking. The Bible was orchestrated by God and not man.  In the last Supper what did Jesus serve? The Wine which was blood and the Bread which was His Flesh. When Joseph was in prison. Who was there with him? The Cupbearer who serve Wine. And the Baker who bake the bread. The wine represents The Blood of Christ; The Bread represents The Body of Jesus. What did Joseph say to the Cupbearer, when he was being set free? “Remember Me” What did Jesus say at The Last Supper? “Do This in Remembrance Of ME” Why does the Bible say that the Baker got hanged and the Cupbearer was set Free? Because Jesus says that we are set free by the blood, which is what the Cupbearer represents. Matthew 26:28 In the Sinful Flesh in which the Baker Represents Has to Die! In Genesis 40: Two men stand before Joseph. One holds a cup - One holds bread One will live - One will die! And Joseph - the rejected, betrayed, falsely accused Hebrew - interprets their destiny This is not coincidence. This is Christ concealed.

A. THE CUPBEARER - “THE CUP OF LIFE” Matthew 26:17-30

B. THE BAKER - “THE BREAD OF JUDGMENT”

C. THE TWO MEN - “THE TWO RESPONSES TO THE GOSPEL”

D. JOSEPH - “THE JESUS FIGURE” Now we return to the table. The bread is broken. The cup is lifted. And the question echoes through eternity: Which man are you? The cupbearer or the baker?
