THE CHRONICLES OF PETER Matthew 26:57-75
INTRODUCTION: Matthew 26:57-75 is the midnight courtroom of the soul - where Jesus stands firm, and Peter falls hard. Yet in Peter’s collapse we discover Christ’s compassion, restoration, and the hope that failure is never final. I could have name this sermon, “THE NIGHT PETER’S COURAGE CLOCKED OUT”. Matthew 26:57–75 is the kind of passage that makes every believer say, “Yep… I’ve been there.” Peter had one of those nights when courage clocked out early, boldness called in sick, and faith took a nap. If you’ve ever bragged about your walk with God on Sunday and tripped over your own feet on Monday, you and Peter are spiritual cousins. Peter is relatable because Peter is real. And in Matthew 26:57-75, we see the Chronicles of Peter - a story of courage, collapse, conviction, and Christ’s compassion.
I. THE ARRESTED CHRIST & THE AGITATED COURT
Matthew 26:57-68
A. The Conspiracy of the Council Matthew 26:57-61“The chief priests and elders… sought false witness.” Greek: pseudomartyria - fabricated testimony. Jewish law forbade nighttime trials (Exodus 23:1–2), contradictory witnesses (Deut. 19:15), and capital cases during feasts. A crooked council convenes to condemn Christ.
B. The Silence of the Savior Matthew 26:62-63 “But Jesus held His peace.” Greek: siōpaō - intentional silence. Fulfillment of: Isaiah 53:7 The silent Savior shows sovereign self-control.
C. The Confession of the Christ Matthew 26:64-68 Jesus declares: “Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power.” Greek: dynamis - divine authority. He references: Daniel 7:13-14 The silent Savior speaks a sovereign sentence.
II. THE FOLLOWING PETER & THE FAILING COURAGE
Matthew 26:69-75
A. The Distance of Discipleship Matthew 26:58
Greek: makrothen — remote, disconnected. Distance breeds danger; detachment breeds denial. Faith fades when feet follow from afar; Courage collapses when Christ is kept at a distance.
B. The Drift into Denial Matthew 26:69-74 Three denials:
1. Denial of Association - “I know not what thou sayest.” (v. 70)
2. Denial of Allegiance - “I do not know the man.” (v. 72)
3. Denial of Identity - “He began to curse and to swear.” (v. 74).
Warm yourself at the world’s fire, and you’ll burn your witness.
C. The Devastation of the Rooster Matthew 26:74-75 “Immediately the cock crew.” Greek: phōnē — a voice, proclamation. Peter “wept bitterly.” Greek: pikros — sharp, piercing tears. A rooster’s cry becomes a redeemer’s call.
D. The Declaration of a Look Luke 22:60-62, Psalm 32:8
III. THE COLLAPSE OF PETER & THE COMPASSION OF CHRIST
A. The Reality of Human Weakness Luke 22:31-34
Jesus predicted Peter’s fall. Jesus prayed for Peter’s faith. Jesus prepared Peter’s restoration. The Savior sees our slip before we stumble.
B. The Remedy of Divine Grace John 21:15-17 Jesus restores Peter with three affirmations matching three denials. A potter does not discard clay because it collapses; he reshapes it with stronger hands.
C. The Recommissioning of the Disciple Acts 2:14-41
Peter becomes the preacher of Pentecost. Grace transforms a trembling traitor into a triumphant teacher.
IV. THE MESSAGE FOR TODAY: WHEN WE ARE PETER
A. Our Moments of Fear II Timothy 1:7 We deny Christ not only with words but with silence, compromise, convenience.
B. Our Need for Roosters Hebrews 12:6 God still sends “roosters” - sermons, songs, Scriptures, friends, convictions.
C. Our Hope of Restoration I John 1:9 Your failure is not final. Your denial is not your destiny. Grace writes new chapters Where guilt wrote dead ends.
CONCLUSION: “THE ROOSTER STILL CROWS”
Peter’s story is our story: Matthew 26:58 - We follow afar off.
Matthew 26:69 - 74 - We fall unexpectedly. Matthew 26:75 - We weep bitterly. John 21:15-17 - We are forgiven completely. Acts 2 - We are used powerfully. To put another way: Peter’s story is our story: We follow Jesus imperfectly. We fall unexpectedly. We are forgiven completely. We are restored beautifully. We are used powerfully. Let Christ restore you to greater usefulness than ever before. Christ died for deniers, doubters, drifters, sinners. He rose to give new life. Come to Christ today.
