It Is Time to Claim Your Canaan
Joshua 1:1-18
Introduction: It’s a brand-new day, claiming our Canaan. The book of Joshua is history; and when you open the book of Joshua, you begin an adventure. You see Joshua and the people of God as they cross the swollen river on dry ground. You see them as they march around the walls of Jericho and give the shout of victory, and the walls fall down flat. You see them as they go out against giants in walled cities ensconced upon the mountaintop, and you see as God gives victory after victory. Now it happened. These are not fables; these are not fairy tales. It literally happened. But ladies and gentlemen, it is more than history. The Bible tells us in I Corinthians chapter 10 that “all these things happened unto them for examples” to us. (1 Corinthians 10:11) And so we’re to learn, because the land of Canaan, dear friend, stands for victory for the people of God today. What does Canaan stand for, for the New Testament Christian? Well, three things.
1. Canaan Stands for Freedom, 2.Canaan Stands for Fullness,
3. Canaan Stands for Reality
I. A Continuing Purpose Joshua 1:1-2
II. A Certain Possession Joshua 1:3-4
Ephesians 1:3, II Peter 1:3-4
III. A Conquering Power Joshua 1:5
I John 4:4, Romans 8:37.
IV. A Constant Promise Joshua 1:5-6
A. The Promises Are to All Saints
B. The Promises Are for All
C. The Promises Are for All Situations
Joshua is reminded of some very precious promises in these verses. Notice what God promised him:
1. The promise of victory over every enemy.
Joshua 1:5 “There shall not any man be able to stand before.”
2. The promise of the presence and power of God.
Joshua 1:5 “...all the days of thy life:”
3. The promise of the faithfulness of God.
J. Joshua 1:5 “...as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
4. The promise of absolute victory.
Joshua 1:6 “...for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land,..”
5. The promise of God to keep His promises.
Joshua 1:6 ? “...which I sware unto their fathers to give them.”
1. He still gives victory over all our enemies. I John 5:4-5
2. He is still ever-present: Hebrews 13:5. and all powerful — Matthew 28:18
3. He is still faithful — Matthew 28:20
4 . He still gives absolute victory — I Corinthians 15:57, Revelation 21:4,21:27
5. He still keeps His promises — Romans 4:21
V. A Courageous Person
“Only …”—the word only qualifies it; it’s not automatic Joshua 1:7
VI. A Controlling Principle
Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
A. The Word of God Should Be in Your Mouth “mouth.” Psalm 113:3
B. The Word of God Should Be in Your Mind “meditate”
Psalm 1:1–2, Psalm 104:34, Psalm 119:15, Psalm 63:3-6
C. The Word of God Should Be in Your Manner of Life. “observe”
VII. A Commanding Personality
The Mobilizing After the Commission Joshua 1:10–18
Joshua 1:9-10 “Then” Psalm 119:60
A. The Message for the Executive Officers Joshua 1:10-11
B. The Message for the Eastern Tribes Joshua 1:12–18
Conclusion: Do you know what success is? Obeying God. Do you know what victory is? Obeying God. Do you know what makes God real to you? Obey God. Bible study—even meditation—does not give you knowledge of God. Bible study gives you knowledge about God; obedience gives you knowledge of God. John 13:17, John 14:21 Put the Word of God in your mouth. Put the Word of God in your mind. Put the Word of God in your manner of life. Begin to obey God. Don’t turn to the right or the left. What He says to you, do. You say, “I don’t have the strength to do it.” He’s got the strength.
