GOING ON AND GETTING BETTER!

Text: Hebrews 6:1–20

The Subject of this chapter is to be loyal to the Gospel and do not go back to the ways of Judaism and live under the law. The Gospel of Christ is far better than any message of Judaism. Hebrews 6 can be divided into four major parts as follows:

I. THE EXHORTATION TO GO ON Hebrews 6:1–3

1. A Time to Define Hebrews 6:1 “leaving”

2. A Time to Leave Hebrews 6:1–3

The Forsaking Hebrews 6:1–2, Hebrews 10:1,3–4,

Colossians 2:17, Galatians 3:24-25

3. A Time to Go on Hebrews 6:1,3

4. A Time to Believe or Beware Hebrews 6:4-6

a. The People

First. Enlightenment. “Enlightened” (Hebrews 6:4)

Second, Enjoyment. “Tasted” (Hebrews 6:4, 5)

Three things are said to have been enjoyed (tasted).

They are the “heavenly gift” (Hebrews 6:4), the “good word of God” (Hebrews 6:5) and the “powers of the world to come” (Hebrews 6:5)

We need to understand that they only “tasted” these things they never swallowed, eat, or digested them. It touches their tongue however they never went in them or came one with them. Romans 10:8

Third, Enjoinment. “Partakers of the Holy Ghost” (Hebrews 6:4). The word translated “partakers” is found seven times in the New Testament and six of those are in Hebrews. As we noted in previous mentions of the word (Hebrews 1:9, 3:1 and 3:14), the meaning of the word is varied depending on the context. It can mean companion (Hebrews 1:9), Partner (Luke 5:7), And Partaker (Hebrews 3:1, 14). The difficulty here is making it mean that the partaking of the Holy Spirit meant the person possessed the Holy Spirit as a saved person, which is just not true.

b. The Practice “If they shall fall away” Hebrews 6:6. I John 2:19

c. The Product “They crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame” (Hebrews 6:6).

d. The Penalty Hebrews 6:4,6, Romans 1:24, 26, Genesis 6:3,

John 12:37–40

5. A Time to Be Blessed or To Be Burned Hebrews 6:7-8

a. The Blessing from God Hebrews 6:7

b. The Ban from God Hebrews 6:8

II. THE SELF-EXAMINATION TO BE REAL AND DO BETTER! Hebrews 6:9-12

1. His Passion Hebrews 6:9 “Beloved”

2. His Persuasion Hebrews 6:9

3. His Praise Hebrews 6:10 The readers are praised for their Christian conduct which is part of “things that accompany salvation.”

4. His Proclamations Hebrews 6:10

5. His Petition Hebrews 6:11-12

III. THE ENCOURAGEMENT TO FAITHFULNESS

Hebrews 6:13-15

1. The Person of Faithfulness Hebrews 6:13 “Abraham”

2. The Promise for Faithfulness Hebrews 6:13, 14

3. The Patience in Faithfulness Hebrews 6:15

IV. THE EXAMPLE OF A CONSISTENT PROMISE

Hebrews 6:16–20

1. The Confirmation Hebrews 6:16-17

2. The Consolation Hebrews 6:18

3. The Character Hebrews 6:19

V. THE ETERNAL HIGH PRIEST HEBREWS 6:19-20

1. The Forerunner. Christ entering into the Holy of holies was a “forerunner” for believers.

This shows that Christ is better than the Aaronic priesthood.

2. The Foreshadowing. “High priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.” This truth will receive more detailed attention in Hebrews 7. The priesthood of Jesus is forever. Hebrew 6:9
