Hebrews 12:2-17
God’s Loving Chastening Hand Hebrews 12:2–11
We See God’s Great Love Hebrews 12: 2 and 3
We See God’s Loving Chastening Hand Hebrews 12:4 through 11
Proverbs 13:24 Paul shows that God does indeed discipline His children. He further shows the blessings of discipline in the Christian’s life.
I. THE PRINCIPLE OF CHASTISEMENT
Hebrews 12:5, Proverbs 3:11–12 The Hebrew writer uses three words to describe the Lord’s discipline of His children.
A.) Chastening Hebrews 12:5
The word carries the idea of Instruction: II Timothy 3:16–17, And Teaching Titus 2:12 Psalm 119:67, Psalm 119:71, Psalm 119:75
B.) Rebuked Hebrews 12:5 It has the idea of being convicted.
C.) Scourgeth Hebrews 12:6 This word comes from the Greek “mastigoi” and means “to flog or whip.” It is a word that speaks of judicial punishment as handed down by a judge.
II. THE PROOF OF CHASTISEMENT
Hebrews 12:6 God’s chastisement is proof of His love for us and of our salvation. In chastisement, we see:
A.) His Compassion For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth (Hebrews 12:6, Proverbs 3:12, Proverbs 13:24, Revelation 3:19
B.) His Confirmation Hebrews 12:6-7 Divine Chastisement is proof of our relationship with the Lord. Proverbs 3:12, Deuteronomy 8:5, Hebrews 12:8 and 9
III. THE PRIORITY OF CHASTISEMENT
Hebrews 12:5, Proverbs 3:11
A.) Our Attitude Hebrews 12:5 “despise not thou the chastening of the Lord,” Proverbs 29:1, Isaiah 45:9
B.) Our Action Proverbs 24:10 If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. Job 5:17–18
IV. THE PRODUCT OF CHASTISEMENT
Hebrews 12:10-11 If we take the proper attitude towards chastening, we will experience the fruit of righteousness in our lives. Chastening is always for our good and when we respond correctly, we are saved from severer judgment.

Hebrews 12:12–17
I. THE EXHORTATION TO FAITHFULNESS
Hebrews 12:12, Isaiah 35:3, Hebrews 12:13, Proverbs 4:25–27
We are admonished … make straight paths for your feet.
II. THE EARNESTNESS TO FOLLOW
Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: In this verse he names two requirements that are necessary if we are to reach our goal.
A.) Peace Hebrews 12:14 “Follow peace with all men,” Romans 12:18,
II Timothy 4:7
B.) Purity Hebrews 12:14 “Follow peace with all men, and holiness”
I Peter 1:15–16, I Thessalonians 4:7
III. THE ENEMY TO FIGHT
Hebrews 12:15 Bitterness is one of the meanest devils that man has ever faced. The Christian is to be sweet—not sour. Bitterness is a deep seated, long burning, smoldering resentment. It is an anger that is constantly brooding and holding grudges.
A.) Unrelenting Diligence Hebrews 12:15 “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God;” Proverbs 14:10
B.) Unseen Danger Hebrews 12:15 “root of bitterness springing up”
C.) Unbearable Distress Hebrews 12:15 “trouble you,” Luke 15:28–29
D.) Unavoidable Defilement Hebrews 12:15 “and thereby many be defiled;”
John 18:28
E.) Unlimited Deliverance Hebrews 12:15 “the grace of God.” Romans 5:20 “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:” II Corinthians 12:9,
Hebrews 4:16
IV. THE EXAMPLE OF FAILURE
Hebrews 12:16-17 The reason Esau was rejected is that he found no place of repentance. In essence, Esau still wanted the blessing, but he didn’t want God.
