Description

Heavenly Light

For Earthly Darkness

Text: Isaiah 50:10-11

I. THOSE OF GREATEST DEVOTION MAY KNOW THE DEEPEST DARKNESS

Isaiah 50:10

A. Darkness is not unusual for the saint of God.

Thousands of saints are perplexed and in deep darkness

B. Think of some of the Bible saints.

1. Job was perplexed.  Job 19:8

2. Habakkuk could not understand.  Habakkuk 1:2

3. John the Baptist found himself in prison.

4. Even the great apostle Paul was perplexed. II Corinthians 4:8

C. Study the biographies of the great saints and most of them will speak of a dark night of the soul.

So if you are in darkness, at least you can say you are in good company.

II. THE FAITH THAT IS BORN IN THE LIGHT OFTEN GROWS IN THE DARK

Isaiah 50:10

1. When did you grow the most?

2. Faith like film is developed in the dark.

Let me tell you about three men all named John, and see what happened to these men when they were in darkness.

John MiltonJohn BunyanJohn the apostle

3. God wants to develop your faith. We should never doubt in dark what we have learned in the light.

4. The test of your character is how you act in the dark.

A. Look to the Lord. "Trust."

verse 10 "Let him trust in the name of the Lord."

Warren Wiersbe said, "We live by promises and not by explanations."  Isaiah 55:8   The soul would have no rainbow had the eye no tears. Thomas Watson said, "Where reason cannot wade, faith must swim."  Just keeping trusting and obeying.

(1) Don't stop praying.

(2) Don't stop witnessing even if no one seems to respond.

(3) Don't stop submitting to an unsaved husband.

(4) Don't stop giving in the middle of financial reverses.

(5) Don't stop praising even if you don't feel like praising.

B. Lean on the Lord.   Rest

"Stay" means to lean for support. It is the root of the word translated "staff". A relationship is more important than a reason.

The darkness may hide, but it cannot divide.

This is what God was teaching Job. Job was saying, "God, you owe me some answers."The Book of Job ends with Job never getting any answers, but Job learning that God alone was enough.

Pain is inevitable for all of us, but misery is optional.

There is no gain without pain. We cannot learn without pain.

III. SOME THINGS ARE SEEN IN THE DARK THAT CANNOT BE SEEN IN THE LIGHT   Isaiah 50:3-4

A. There are some treasures of darkness.   Isaiah 45:3

B. The stars that hang like chandeliers in the velvet canopy of space are only seen in the darkness.

The stars do not come out at night. They are there all the time.

Psalm 148:3, Psalm 148:3:

Darkness hides that which is near, but it also reveals that which is far away. We may see more clearly in the daytime, but we see further at night. In the daylight, we may think the brightest thoughts, but at night, we often think the deepest thoughts.

Night conceals a world but reveals a universe.

IV. IT IS BETTER FOR YOU TO BE LEANING ON GOD IN THE DARKNESS THAN STANDING ALONE IN MAN-MADE LIGHT  Isaiah 50:11

A. One of the great dangers of darkness is that we may light our own fire.

B. Remember that the darkness may be ordained of God.  Psalm 50:3

C. Man-made fire is deceptive.

You cannot look at a sundial with a flashlight and tell the time.

D.) Walk in your own light and you will have sorrow.

1. Think of Abraham.  2. Think of Moses.  3. Think of Simon Peter.

There can be poison in the cup of sorrow, but only if we put it there ourselves.

V. IF YOUR SUN HAS SET, IT WILL RISE AGAIN Isaiah 50:4 "Waketh morning by morning."

Night falls but never breaks, and day breaks but never falls.

A. Your dark night will come to an end.

Come what come may; Time and the hour runs through the darkest day.  William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

He will turn every hurt to a hallelujah and every tear to a pearl. Your Calvary will one day be an resurrected New life ..

Psalm 112:4Psalm 30:5Psalm 23

B. Some things will be seen more clearly after the darkness. Three Things About Darkness:

1.) It is not unusual.  Every heart has its own ache. Not to have had pain is not to have been human.

2.) It is not unfruitful.  Romans 8:28 Sorrow is a fruit. God does not make it grow on limbs too weak to bear it.

3.) It is not unending. Psalm 30:5 The same sun that sets is the sun that rises again.  Just because it doesn't make sense to you now, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense. Isaiah 50:10, 11.

There is a sweet joy that comes to us through sorrow.
