Faith With Legs On It

(The First Astronaut - Faith sermon # 3)

Text: Hebrews 11:5-6

Introduction: Enoch = Dedicated, Genesis 5:21-24 (background verses). Hebrews 11:5-6

Genesis 5 starts out reading like an obituary column in a newspaper.

Note the statement: “And he died” in verses  5, 8, 11, 14, 20, 27.   Until it comes to Enoch in verse 24 “And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”.  Verse 24 is like a rose in a cemetery.

Enoch’s claim to fame was that he walked with God. Today, I want us to look at four things about the walk Enoch had with God:

I. THE MEANING OF THE WALK WITH GOD    Genesis 5:22

A.) Why Did God Save You?  Micah 6:8

B.) Some Could Know About The Walk With God And Still Never Walk With God Or Even Know Him.

C.) God Has A Walk With Him Just For You.

Psalm 37:23-24

1. The greatest discovery is to know Jesus as your personal Saviour.

2. The second greatest discovery is to know God’s plan for your life.

3. The greatest achievement is to do it.

I John 1:7Ephesians 2:10

D.) We Sing About The Walk.

1. Trust And Obey

2. In The Garden

3. Leaning On The Everlasting Arms Second verse

II. THE MOTIVATION OF THE WALK WITH GOD

There were three things which motivated Enoch to walk with God:

A.) FAMILY      Genesis 5:21-22

B.) FEAR       Genesis 5:21

Methuselah = When he is gone, it will be sent.

Amos 3:7, II Peter 3:9 The flood came the day Methuselah died.

Add it up: Genesis 5:25 “187 years” and Genesis 5:28 “182 years” (187 + 182 = 369) Add Genesis 7:11 “600 years” this = 969.

Methuselah died on his birthday on the second month and 17th day of the month which also is the same day the flood came upon the earth. Enoch knew a flood was coming!  Fear is a good motivator.

Psalm 25:14Psalm 111:10

C.) FAITH   Hebrews 11:5-6

III. THE MAINTENANCE OF THE WALK WITH GOD  Genesis 5:21-24

A.) Enoch Had A 300 Year Walk With God.

That is 109,500 days walking with God. No wonder he pleased God. If Enoch walked with God, so can we. He lived in the days of Noah.  Noah’s day was just as wicked as our day today. I John 4:4

B.) Enoch Was A Man Of Spiritual Choice.  Jude 14-16

IV. THE MYSTERY OF THE WALK WITH GOD     Hebrews 11:5Genesis 5:24

It was a mystery and It will be a mystery (I Corinthians 15:51-57, I Thessalonians 4:13-18).

Conclusion

Jesus said, "It's done. It's finished." That's what He meant, when He cried out in victory upon the cross: "It is finished" (John 19:30)

He worked and rested, that you might rest and then work. "For by grace are ye saved through faith... unto good works" (Ephesians 2:8-9).  You're not saved by doing good works. You're saved by faith in the crucified Son of God, the One who said: "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Have the sort of Faith that will cause you dedicated, faithful and close walk with God. Than resting in God will come easy.Sometimes, when a person dies, we put on their grave marker "Rest in Peace." But, friend, it will take more than a tombstone to bring rest to your soul. And, if you don't have that faith rest, you will never have that final rest. For, the Bible speaks of those who die without the Lord Jesus, and it says: "They have no rest day nor night" (Revelation 14:11). You have to rest in Jesus.
