Welcome to Our Missionary

We are excited to have our newly elected missionary, Brad Gathright, as our special speaker today. He will be sharing with us about the ministry he will have in the country of Honduras. He is responsible for raising 65% of his salary and benefits. Listen carefully and prayerfully to him and his message today. Ask the Lord if our church should commit to helping him reach the goal for his financial support. Most of all, we need to pray for him as he begins this new venture for the Lord. Following is a brief biographical sketch of Brother Brad:

I was born in Oklahoma City, OK, and raised in Jefferson Heights Baptist Church there. I graduated from Central Baptist College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible and from the BMA Theological Seminary with a Master of Religious Education. I have worked as an ABS Director, Youth/Education Director, Pastored Churches, and as a Missionary in Mexico. I am also a Registered Nurse.

I am happily married to my wife, Penny. We have three children Chris 25, Ben 20 and Hannah 19. Chris is married to Bethany. We have one granddaughter, Olivia. Ben is working in management at Whataburger. Hannah is living at home with us. She will be going to Honduras with us.

We will be working with Pastors and Church Planters to implement Discipleship Programs and Leadership Development.

Appreciation Banquet

The ladies of our Women’s Missionary Auxiliary invite you to remain for food and fellowship after the Morning Worship. This is their way of expressing appreciation to the members and guests who are present today. Please let each of them know how much we appreciate them for their time and the expense of this fellowship time. Each one is invited to stay.

Two Prayer Requests for the Jordan Family

Mary Jordan is having severe back problems and needs our prayer support. The family has also requested prayer for their son, Kevin, who has been hospitalized with a knee problem. He is in the Air Force, stationed in Alaska.

In the choir of life, it’s easy to fake the words–

but someday each of us will have to sing solo before God.—Copied.

From Our Pastor

It is always a joy to have guests with us who share how our Lord is working around the world. Today we have the opportunity to hear from Bro. Gathright about the plans God has given him for the work in Honduras. As we listen to what he has to say, let us prayerfully consider how God can use our church to be a blessing to our missionaries and their work—and, as always, let us consider how God can use each of us to make disciples here in Fayetteville.

Also you’re invited to celebrate Benjamin Byrns’ first birthday, next Saturday, May 5th, at 2 PM! This celebration will be held in the Fellowship Hall at Eastside. –Bro. Jared

Prayer Requests for Hospital Chaplains

Two chaplains for Washington Regional Medical Center have special needs at this time. Joyce Fuhrman, the wife of staff chaplain, Ron Fuhrman, will be having surgery Monday morning. Volunteer chaplain, Lynville Eaton pastor of Illinois Chapel Baptist Church, Prairie Grove, needs our prayers as he leads this church through the events following the arson which destroyed much of their building. Also, someone painted their building and property with Satanic symbols.

Both of these men and their families are dedicated Christians and would appreciate our prayers in their behalf. It has been my pleasure to work with them for quite a while. Please pray for God’s richest blessings on them during their time of trials. –Phil Misenheimer

Grace vs. Justice and Mercy

Grace is getting what we do not deserve.

Justice is getting what we do deserve.

Mercy is not getting what we do deserve.

Regular Giving–Think About It!

We have a regular time for washing our face, combing our hair, dressing, and brushing our teeth. We do not have a regular time for washing our car. It shows. You know, giving is like that. If it is not done regularly,

it doesn’t get done.–Copied.

From Bro. Jared:

I want to thank the church for sending me to the BMAA National Meeting this week in Mississippi. It is not only a time of business, but of learning what is going on in our missions work and hearing great preaching. I was encouraged and challenged this week by the men who preached God’s Word, and I’m grateful for the chance to go. I also want to thank James McEntire and Jack Moore for accompanying me and keeping me out of trouble! (Note: Is this about like the foxes watching the hen house? PM)

Thanks From All Of Us!

Our church appreciates Darrell Barker conducting Bible Study last Wednesday evening in the absence of our pastor. It is great to have those who are willing and able to assume responsibilities like these.

Let Go and Let God!

Helen Steiner Rice

When you’re troubled and worried and sick at heart

And your plans are upset and your world falls apart,

Remember God’s ready and waiting to share

The burden you find much too heavy to bear–

So with faith, “LET GO” and “LET GOD” lead the way

Into a brighter and less troubled day.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8

Shirley & Marcy
A mother was concerned about her kindergarten son, Timmy, walking to school. He didn’t want his mother to walk with him. She wanted to give him the feeling that he had some independence, but yet know that he was safe. So she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor if she would please follow him to school in the mornings, staying at a distance, so he probably wouldn’t notice her. The neighbor said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way for them to get some exercise as well, so she agreed.

The next school day, the neighbour and her little girl set out following behind Timmy as he walked to school with another neighbor girl he knew. She did this for the whole week. As the two walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy ‘s little friend noticed the same lady was following them as she seemed to do every day all week. Finally she said to Timmy, “Have you noticed that lady following us to school all week? Do you know her?”

Timmy nonchalantly replied, “Yeah, I know who she is.” The little girl said, “Well, who is she?” “That’s just Shirley Goodnest,” Timmy replied, “and her daughter Marcy .” “Shirley Goodnest? Who is she and why is she following us?” “Well,” Timmy explained, “every night my Mom makes me say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers, “‘cuz she worries about me so much. And in the Psalm, it says, ‘Shirley Goodnest (surely goodness) and Marcy (mercy) shall follow me all the days of my life.’ So I guess I’ll just have to get used to it!”

Note: I received the above story from by e-mail from several people. Many of you don’t have e-mail, so I edited it and thought you would enjoy it. PM.

Next Sunday is a Very Special Day!

Next Sunday morning, April 29th, we will have a special guest, Bro. Brad Gathright. He was elected missionary to Honduras last week at the annual meeting of the BMA of America. This will give us the chance to meet him, learn about his plans for the mission work there, and also pray for him and his family.

Following the morning worship, we will be treated to an Appreciation Banquet by our Women’s Missionary Auxiliary. They will be providing all the food for us–all we need to add is the FELLOWSHIP! All are invited to stay for this.

The Evening Worship will be a time of singing, testimonies, Scripture reading, poetry, and prayer. All of us should come prepared to share about Jesus and to enjoy a time of spiritual refreshing. Why not invite your friends and neighbors to enjoy this time with us. The song writer said, “Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!”

Our Father, Our Friend

Benjamin Franklin

And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance? I have lived a long time; and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?

From Bro. Jared

I have been greatly encouraged by the number of people who have shown an interest in discipleship training in the last couple of weeks. Whether or not someone participates in DiscipleWay, the important thing is that we find ways to better follow Christ. Even if you don’t take the training, I want to ask you to be in prayer for it and for the ministry and outreach of this church.

Thanks for the Banners!

Thanks to all who were involved in making and hanging the new banners in our sanctuary. There is no more important message than the fact that Jesus Saves! It would be great if, anytime we come to worship, we look at the banners and say, “Thank you Lord!”

Mark Your Calendars

April 29th is a special day for many reasons. It is the “Lord’s Day” and another opportunity for our church to assemble to worship Him. We will have the opportunity to study His Word in Sunday School. We will sing His praises, pray for His blessings and hear His Word preached during the worship time.

Then, our Women’s Missionary Auxiliary (WMA) will provide lunch for all in attendance following the worship. This means that all the rest of us have to do is be there and enjoy the meal. This is their way of expressing their appreciation for all Eastside members and guests.

That evening at 6:00, we will gather for a time of praise to our God. We will be given the privilege of praising Him in songs, testimonies, Scripture readings or other spiritual writings. Make plans now to attend and participate in this special time.

BMA of America Annual Meeting

Three of our men, Jared Byrns, Jack Moore and James McEntire, will be leaving in the morning to attend the Baptist Missionary Association of America annual meeting in Jackson, MS. We need to pray for them as they travel and for the messengers assembled there. They will report to our church when they return.

Be A Plodder!

William Carey, when asked about his great accomplishments in his work of translating the Bible into Indian languages and dialects, said: “I am not a genius, just a plodder.” But what a plodder! In forty years of labor, he translated all or portions of the Bible into thirty-four of the languages and dialects of India. –Copied

Speaking of Missionaries…

On Sunday morning, April 29th, we will have a special guest, Bro. Brad Gathright. He will be presented as a nominee to be elected as missionary to Honduras this coming week. This will give us the chance to meet him and learn about his plans for the mission work there.

Pray for Slater Downing

Slater Downing, the son of Billy and Michelle Jarrett, had extensive surgery this past week. In an e-mail, Michelle gave this report: “The short trip home was much harder than he expected. He has been mostly sleeping since he came home and is still in considerable pain. He still has a collapsed lung and some chest pain, but the general surgeon believes that will heal itself.” She thanks the church for the prayers for Slater and asks that we continue to pray for him.

Don’t Quit!

A teenager had decided to quit high school, saying he was just fed up with it all. His father was trying to convince him to stay with it. “Son,” he said, “You just can’t quit. All the people who are remembered in history didn’t quit. Abe Lincoln, he didn’t quit. Douglas MacArthur, he didn’t quit. Elmo McCringle…”

“Who?” the son burst in. “Who’s Elmo McCringle?”

“See,” the father replied, “You don’t remember him. He quit!”

We, as Christians, need to learn from the above illustration. There are times when we may be tempted to quit. Aren’t we so glad that Jesus was unwilling to quit as He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane? His determination took Him to the cross, the tomb and God’s right hand!

What is Gospel Preaching?

Some have described preaching in this way: “A mild-mannered man standing up before mild-mannered people and exhorting them to be more mild-mannered.” The true function of Gospel preaching is to disturb the comfortable and to comfort the disturbed.

Eastside Missionary Baptist Church

“The end of your search for a friendly church.”

The Resurrection Is Sure!

A Hungarian countess, a professed unbeliever, commanded that her body be interred in a stone casket in a mausoleum that was to be built about it. A plate was placed on the front of the mausoleum giving her name and some particulars of her death, and then the words, “Not to be opened for eternity.” She would defy God to raise her from the dead.

But while they were building that mausoleum and before sealing the body in that tomb, an acorn dropped into the tomb. Today there is an oak tree rising out of the center of it. It is broken asunder and the casket is exposed. It was opened by an acorn under the hand of Almighty God.

You cannot thwart God; you cannot hinder God’s omnipotent working. Pilate said, “Make it as sure as you can,” and they did everything that human ingenuity could suggest to keep the body of Jesus in that grave in Judea. All their effort was overthrown. He who had yielded up Himself to death, took His life back again by commandment from God. He was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father! –H. A. Ironside.

Think About It…Just For Fun

Never laugh at a person’s efforts to speak or write English correctly. Of the four major languages, it is the most difficult to learn. Here is why.

We’ll begin with the box, the plural of which is boxes; but the plural of ox is oxen, not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, and two are called geese; but the plural of mouse is never meese.

You may find a lone mouse, or a whole nest of mice; but the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is men, why shouldn’t the plural of pan be pen?

If I speak of a foot and you show me two feet, or give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, why shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth?

Then, the masculine pronouns are he, his and him; but imagine the feminine as she, shis, and shim!” –Copied.

The Promises of the Bible are very large; you can lie down and stretch out on them and you can’t kick the footboard, scratch the headboard, or touch the railing on either side. –Bud Robinson.

The cross is the last argument of God. –C. H. Spurgeon.

From Bro. Jared:

We may not know the exact date on which Jesus rose again from the dead, but there are some things we do know. We know that He did die on the cross. We know that He was buried. And we know that He did rise again from the dead–just like He said He would! We celebrate these facts on Easter, but it is not a once-a-year occurrence. Every Sunday, we celebrate together the salvation He purchased with His death and the hope we have because of His resurrection. If you’re visiting with us today, we’re glad you’re here, and we want to invite you to join us for “Easter” each week.

We celebrate Easter because Christ has risen from the dead and lives forevermore. It’s not just another day or just another reason for a holiday. In fact, the early church chose to worship together on the first day of the week, Sunday, because that was the day Christ rose from the dead. May it never become mundane or commonplace; may it never be relegated to a cheap celebration of bunnies and pastel eggs, or just another rite of spring. The centerpiece of Easter is the celebration of our life in Christ. So we join with the saints of ages past in declaring, “He is risen, He is risen indeed!”

Note: The above paragraph is quoted from an article by the same title which was written by a friend of mine, Mickey Rapier, for the April 2012 issue of Celebrate Arkansas Magazine. Mickey is a staff member of the Fellowship Bible Church of Rogers. –Phil Misenheimer.

Please Check Our Church Calendar!

Sunday, April 29th will be a special day. A pot-luck fellowship lunch will follow the Morning Worship. At 6 PM, we will have a time of special singing, testimonies, Scripture readings, inspirational readings, etc. The Bible says, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” Let’s praise the Lord!

Due to Easter being a family time–no choir rehearsal today.

Some people think a 30 minute sermon is too long,

so they substitutre a 300 column Sunday paper.

From Bro. Jared

A recent Trumpet article, which Bro. Ted called to my attention, closed this way: If we took an honest account of how often we share the Gospel with those around us, we “would have the reason the churches are in decline. We don’t need a remodel; we need a revival.” I want to remind us of our need to pray earnestly that God would give us the opportunities to share the Gospel, the alertness to notice the opportunities, and the desire to take those opportunities. Our greatest desire should be that He use Eastside to lift Him up and draw others unto Him.
If there’s room in the bulletin, would you also include a mention of the Good Friday services at Bethel, Bentonville? It will be April 6, at 7pm. I am going to try to attend, and I think it might be beneficial to our people if they were able to go. If you need additional information, it’s advertised on the back page of the March Banner.

The Wisdom of a Child

A four-year-old child’s next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy just said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry.” –Via E-mail

Speaking of a Child…

A mother asked her eight year-old son, “What did you learn in Sunday School today?”

He said, “The teacher told us about when God sent Moses behind the enemy lines to rescue the Israelites from the Egyptians. She said that when the Israelites came to the Red Sea, Moses called for the engineers to build a pontoon bridge and they all barely got across it in time, because the Egyptians were right behind them. They were coming in tanks and Moses radioed headquarters on the walkie-talkie to send bombers to blow up the bridge and they did and all the Egyptians were stuck and that’s how Moses saved the Israelites.”

His mother asked, “Now, Billy, is that really the way the teacher told the story?” Billy replied, “Well, not exactly, but if I told it her way you’d never believe it!” –Copied

We may get a chuckle out of stories like this, but it is true that people often try to “explain away” the miracles of God. Faith is a fantastic thing. It accepts those things we can’t explain. The Bible defines faith this way, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11: 1 and 6). We need to learn to “walk by faith, not sight.”

Thanks for the Church Calendar

Carol Goff faithfully prints our church’s calendar of events which is included in the bulletin each month. Great job!

The Rule of Law

A law is a set pattern of how things happen; but is a rule. The law of gravity deems that a heavy slab of concrete will remain where it is placed. Thus sidewalks stay in place. But we all have seen a sidewalk that is heaved up and twisted because once a small acorn fell between the slabs of the sidewalk and now has grown into a massive oak tree whose roots are powerful enough to move great weights.

That is what is means by the triumph of one law over another–such as the law of life over the law of sin and death. Notice what God inspired the Apostle Paul to write in Romans 8:1-2, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” –Copied

Children’s Church Easter Egg Hunt
The Children’s Ministry is having an Easter Egg Hunt and party on Easter Sunday during Children’s Church. Children are to bring their own Easter baskets. We are also accepting donations of prefilled eggs that will be used for the Hunt. Please leave the eggs downstairs in Fellowship Hall. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Kimberly Moore

A great many people are afraid of enthusiasm. If a man is enthusiastic they raise the cry, “Zeal without knowledge!” I should rather have zeal without knowledge than knowledge without zeal. I know men wise as owls without any fire in their souls. Anyone who realizes his standing before God will be on fire all year! -D. L. Moody

Death…
A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, “Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.” Very quietly, the doctor said, “I don’t know.” ”You don’t know? You’re a Christian man and don’t know what’s on the other side?”

The doctor was holding the handle of the door. On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining. And, as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, “Did you notice my dog? He’s never been in this room before. He didn’t know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here. And, when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing. I know my Master is there and that is enough.” …Via E-mail

A Time of Preaching, Fellowship and Praise!

Our church voted to have a potluck lunch following the Morning Worship on April 29th. That way we can feast in three ways, spiritually, physically and socially. The Evening Worship will give us a time of using our talent for the Lord. Immediately, some will say I can’t sing or play an instrument. The biggest talent each Christian has is the opportunity to share his or her testimony.

You may say, I can’t find the right words. Let God say it for you! Some of the sweetest words of testimony are found in the Bible. Read a passage of Scripture. You may also find a poem or other writing. Speaking of the Bible, it says, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so…” (Psalm 107:2)

Ask Your Mother

A little boy was allowed to sit in his father’s place at the dinner table one evening when his father was absent. His slightly older sister, resenting the arrangement, sneered, “So, you’re the father tonight. All right, how much is two times seven?” Without a moment’s hesitation, Billy said, “I’m busy, ask your mother.” …Copied

From Bro. Jared

I want to thank everyone who attended and participated in the Lord’s Supper last week. It was a spiritually-uplifting time, and I’m glad we were able to share it as a church. And a big thank you to the deacons for being flexible with the order of things. I appreciate you, gentlemen.

Are We Really Listening?

Listening is not just passive hearing. It is an active participating experience in which you pay genuine attention to what the other person is saying. Here are some principles that should help you become a better listener:

  1. Don’t grab the conversation: “Yes, now take me, for instance…”
  2. Don’t let your gaze wander from the other person’s face except momentarily.
  3. Validate the feelings of the other: “Yes, I see what you mean.”
  4. Don’t interrupt.
  5. Don’t try to top the other person’s story or joke.
  6. Don’t criticize.
  7. Ask appropriate questions: “What happened then?” or “How did you feel?”
  8. Don’t argue.

These guidelines are cited by Cecil C. Osborne, in the “Art of Getting Along with People.” …Copied

As Christians, it is important that we are “good listeners” in sharing our faith. Sometimes it is not what we say, but what we don’t say. In teaching our chaplains at the hospital, we emphasize “the ministry of presence.” Allow the other person the privilege of sharing and only respond to what they say and feel–not what you think they said and how you think they feel. There is some truth in the old adage, “Silence is golden.” …PM

Welcome, New Members!

The Lord blessed as Ed and Mary Jordan united with our church by statement last Sunday morning. They have been visiting for quite a while and have become members of our choir.

Thanks for Your Liberality!

The Lord led our church to give a special offering to Gideons International last Sunday morning. This will be used by the Gideons to purchase Bibles for distribution all over the world.

From Our Pastor

Our speaker this morning is Lanny Rice from the Prairie Grove Camp of the Gideons. I know that we’ll be blessed by the message he brings this morning, and I hope that we in turn will be a blessing to others with a generous offering to the work of the Gideons. Also, I want to encourage every member to be here tonight for the Lord’s Supper at 6 pm. It is a great privilege that God has given us to commemorate Christ’s sacrifice in this way! Bro. Jared

About Our Speaker…

Lanny Rice, a member of Gideons International since 1979 and a Sunday School teacher since 1976, will be present this morning to give us a report of the work of this great organization. We will have the opportunity to give a special offering for the purchase of Bibles at the close of the service.

The Lord’s Supper

The members of our church will be given the privilege of observing the Lord’s Supper in the Evening Worship tonight. Let’s expect a blessing as we commemorate the sacrificial death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

CEO Food Drive

As you know, our church assists with the ministry of the CEO in helping provide food items as well as volunteers who help with the distribution. Please bring any kind of non-perishable food items on or before April 15. These may be placed on the counter in the Fellowship Hall.

Special Prayer Requests

Remember to pray for Lola Bryant, who is in Washington Regional. Also remember the family of Johnny Gabbard in their time of sorrow. Also, please pray for Emery Faulkner and Andria Gilbreath.

What’s Wrong With Being Old-Fashioned?

In the America of yesterday you paid your debts as quickly as possible, and went without things, to do it.

You disciplined your children–but disciplined yourself first.

You spent less than you earned, and demanded your government do the same.

You went to church, your children to Sunday School, you held daily prayers–and no court would have dared to interpose any law into your private religion.

You would have been horrified (and quick to change) men in high places who made “deals.”

You expected to prosper by individual initiative–by doing a better and better job.

You obeyed the law–but took active enough part in government to see that the laws were just. You “walked softly but carried a big stick.”

And that was the character which brought this country victory in two world wars, built it back from a shattering depression, and fed and saved the civilized world.

If that is “old hat,” so be it. It needs to be resurrected! –Copied.

Children’s Ministry Meeting

The Children’s Ministry will have a leaders meeting at 4:30 PM on March 25th. This is a meeting to elect officials within our group, so if you are not here you may return to a collection of hats. I cannot control the election process. You will have to fend for yourselves. See you here. –Michelle.

An Age-Old Question

An old question, “Can I be a Christian without joining the church or attending worship?” The answer is: Yes, it is possible, but it is something like being:

  • A student who will not go to school;
  • A soldier who will not join the army;
  • A citizen who does not pay taxes or vote;
  • A salesman with no customers;
  • A captain in a ship with no crew;
  • A businessman on a deserted island;
  • A ball player with no team;
  • A politician who is a hermit;
  • A scientist who does not share his findings;
  • A bee without a hive.

The Lord established His Church that we might “assemble” and that we might find “fellowship” with other Christians. Also, we can carry out the “teaching” part of the Great Commission. –Copied.

Thank You From David and Shelley Dickson

Dear folks, thanks so much for the warm welcome you gave Shelley and me, you made us feel as though we were at a big family reunion. Your generous offering to world missions is greatly appreciated, and will be put to good use wherever needs arise around the world. And of course, we certainly enjoyed the “eatin’ meetin’” after church, a great Baptist tradition! Please remember to keep us in your prayers as we serve the Lord in Central and South America.

Thanks For Your Liberal Giving!

The Lord laid on our hearts to give a total of $1,804.00 to World Missions last Sunday. Then, we voted to add $240.00 to that amount from the Missions Fund last Wednesday evening, making a total of $2,044.00!

Happy Birthday, Benjamin! Everyone is invited to celebrate Benjamin Byrns’ first birthday next Friday evening, March 16th, 6 PM, in Fellowship Hall at Eastside. Gifts are not necessary and dinner will be served.
Please RSVP to Jared at (479) 530-8830 or jhbyrns@hotmail.com.

Think About It! –C. H. Spurgeon

Long prayers injure prayer meetings. Fancy a man praying for twenty minutes, and then asking God to forgive his shortcomings.

From the Pastor

Thank you all for the tremendous hospitality you showed last week to our visiting missionary, Bro. David Dickson. He commented to me about how friendly the people at Eastside are. Also, I commend you for your great generosity toward missions. We were able to give over $2,000 for the support of our North American and International missionaries after last Sunday’s offering! These funds make it possible for others to go where we cannot, and share the Gospel with people we’ll never meet. God bless you for your faithfulness. Also, if you’d like to keep up with Bro. Dickson’s work, he has a website you can read at http://www.missionarydickson.blogspot.com.

Forgiveness

A Scottish physician was noted for his skill and piety. After his death when his books were examined, several accounts had written across them in red ink: “Forgiven…too poor to pay.”

His wife, who was of a different disposition, said: “These accounts must be paid!” She therefore sued for the money.

The judge asked her, “Is this your husband’s handwriting in red ink?” She replied in the affirmative.

“Then,” said he, “there’s not a tribunal in the land that can obtain the money where he has written, ‘Forgiven.’” So, likewise when Jesus writes the word “Forgiven” across our account in the ledger of Heaven, we are released from condemnation. –Copied

Answer to an Atheist

Once an atheist asked a Christian lady if she believed the Bible to be true. “Yes,” said the lady. “Then,” said the atheist, “tell me how a whale swallowed Jonah as a whale’s stomach is no bigger than a man’s head.”

“I don’t know,” said the lady; “but when I get to Heaven I will ask him.” “What if Jonah is not there,” said the atheist. “Then you ask him,” said the lady. –Copied

Another Very Special Day

Lanny Rice, a member of Gideons International, will be present next Sunday morning to give us a report of the work of this great organization. We will have the opportunity to give a special offering for the purchase of Bibles at the close of the service.

The Lord’s Supper

The members of our church will be given the privilege of observing the Lord’s Supper in the Evening Worship next Sunday. Let’s expect a blessing as we commemorate the sacrificial death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Her Money’s Worth?

A small boy observed his mother put a dollar in the offering plate

the poor sermon. “But, Mother,” the little boy said,

“what could you expect for a dollar?”

World Missions Sunday

Don’t forget that we will have Missionary David Dickson and his wife, Shelley, with us as special guests today. Pray for Brother David as he preaches and gives us a report on the missions work of the Baptist Missionary Association of America in our Morning Worship.

He and Shelley have served many years in preaching the Gospel in missions work in Nicaragua, Honduras and Puerto Rico. He pioneered the work to the Garifuna people in Central America. He studied the language in order that he might preach to them in person and by radio.

Our church supports the North American and Foreign missions work of the BMA of America on a regular basis. However, we will receive a special offering for missions at the close of the service this morning. Let’s GIVE that others might LIVE!

I Am a Disciple of Jesus!

I am a part of the fellowship of the unashamed. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I am a disciple. I won’t look back, let up. slow down, or back away.

My past is redeemed. My present makes sense. My future is secure. I’m finished and done with low living, sight-walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheap giving and dwarfed goals. I no longer need preeminence. prosperity, position, promotion, plaudits, or popularity. I don’t have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded or rewarded. I now live by faith, lean on His Presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power.

My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is Heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions few, my Guide reliable, my mission clear.

I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I won’t give up, shut up, let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, preached up, for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of Jesus! Is this a true description of our lives? (Copied from the bulletin of First Baptist Church, Potosi, Missouri.)

A Praying Farmer

An honest farmer was asked to dine with a gentleman. The farmer, according to his custom, gave thanks to God. Whereupon his host jeered him, “That is old-fashioned; it is not customary nowadays for well-educated people to pray at the table.” The farmer stated that it was customary with him, but not with some members of his household. “Oh, then,” said the gentleman, “they are sensible and enlightened. Who are they?” “They are my pigs,” answered the farmer. (Copied)

From Our Pastor

I’m excited to welcome our special guest speaker this morning, Bro. David Dickson. He is a respected veteran missionary in our association, not to mention a terrific speaker. I’ve had the opportunity to hear him speak a few times at meetings, and I know that we’re all in for a blessing today. Pray for his family and his ministry, as they continue to serve the Lord.

Bro. Jared

Thank You!

Joyce and I want to thank you for your prayers, phone calls, cards, and the flowers from the WMA during the past few weeks. Joyce’s anemia has improved, but has been diagnosed with a heart murmur. She is scheduled for a stress test on March 13th and has an appointment with a cardiologist on April 3rd.

I met with a surgeon concerning possible carpal tunnel surgery. He has referred me to a neurologist for a nerve conduction test first. While I am saying “thank you,” I want to thank Johnnie Woods for preparing the bulletin for the last two weeks. I still have some pain in my right hand, but it does not appear to hurt too much when I type, so I will be doing the bulletin a week at the time until I know something further. Phil Misenheimer

“False Doctoring”

A Sunday School teacher asked her class, “What is false doctrine?” One of her pupils, the son of a physician, had this answer: “False doctorin’ is when a doctor gives sick people the wrong stuff.”

How true! False doctrine is “false doctoring” indeed; too many preachers today give the “wrong stuff” to sin-sick people. (Copied)

From Our Pastor:

Over the next couple of weeks you’ll see installments of an article published in the Trumpet two weeks ago, called “I am a Church Member.” Portions were written by Thom Rainer and other portions by Bro. Larry Barker at our Missions Department. I have asked Bro. Phil to reprint the article because I loved it. The Bible calls the local church a “body.” Just like the human body, the church functions properly only when each of its members are together and working together. This article is an excellent reminder that each member of this church matters; each one of us is vital to the work we do.

I Am A Church Member By Larry Barker

Director of Operations North America

BMA of America Missions Department

Maybe you have read or heard me say that I “almost” wish we did not call it membership when you unite with a local congregation. Today many interpret membership with entitlement instead of enlistment into service. We think because we are a member that we have rights such as a parking spot, a particular pew and the ability to sway the vote in business meetings. The problem is that the Scriptures do not speak about rights but rather about serving one another and others. Through the years I have even heard “members” say that they pay their tithes and that entitles them to certain privileges.

Recently I ran across the article “I Am a Member” on Thom Rainer’s blog and it challenged me about church membership. My attention was especially drawn to the paragraph on how much he liked the “metaphor of membership.” Our message is the same because whatever word we use for our participation in a local body of believers we are a part of the body because of Who we belong to and what He has called us to; a life of sacrifice and service. My prayer is that all of us will think about an old adage as we read this, “What kind of church would this church be if every member were just like me?” (Note: Article will continue in next week’s bulletin.)

Thank You Notes:

World Missions Sunday:

Don’t forget that we will have Missionary David Dickson and his wife, Shelley, with us as special guests on Sunday, February 26th. Pray for Brother David as he preaches and gives us a report on the missions work of the Baptist Missionary Association of America in our Morning Worship. We will receive a special offering for missions at the close of the service. Let’s GIVE that others might LIVE!

Say A Prayer?

Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother’s house.  Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served.  When Little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away.  “Johnny!  Please wait until we say our prayer,” said his mother.  “I don’t need to,” the boy replied.  “Of course, you do,” his mother insisted.  “We always say a prayer before eating at our house.”  “That’s at our house,” Johnny explained.  “But this is Grandma’s house and she knows how to cook.”                       —Copied
